Trinity College Montessori Newsletter / Edition 01 / 14 February 2012

From the Director

The first two weeks at preschool have been very busy, with the returning children settling, excited to see old friends and the new children exploring the environment and meeting new friends. The programme has focused on following the children’s interests and creating interesting settings for the children to explore. The objective for the first few weeks focuses on the Early Learning Framework (ELYF) Outcome 1 - Children Develop a Strong Sense of Identity. We want the children to feel safe, secure and supported when attending preschool, while at the same time developing confidence, independence, resilience and interacting with others with care and respect.

We are all enjoying being back at preschool this year and are looking forward to a great term, making new friends, learning new things and having fun together.

Special Activities

This term we have already visited Trinity Farm to see the new baby chicks and other animals. Additionally we have the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra booked to present 'Edward and Edwina Emu' on tour on Wednesday 4 April.  With these and other special activities we have planned throughout the year, each child will have the opportunity to participate in at least one, possibly more fun experiences.

Reminders

At the beginning of each year there are always some reminders we would like you to keep in mind. As we have a number of children with serious allergies our centre is PEANUT FREE. Please no peanut sandwiches or products with nuts or seeds. The preschool has a healthy eating policy and we actively encourage children to eat healthy food while they are here. This could include a piece of fresh fruit for morning tea, a sandwich or cold meat and salad vegetables for lunch with some dip or yoghurt and for afternoon tea perhaps some dried fruit or cheese shapes. Check out the Nutrition Australia website for more ideas. Children’s drink bottles should contain water only and will be kept in the classroom for the children to help themselves when thirsty.

The morning session starts at 8.45am. Children of Trinity staff who also start at this time are welcome to drop their children from 8.30. At the end of the session 11.30/3.15 we ask that you wait in the foyer so that each child can be dismissed individually to their parent/grandparent or carer.  Please ensure the sign in/out form is completed. These steps are necessary to ensure the safety of each child. It’s very difficult to conduct a safe dismissal and answer general questions about a child’s day at preschool, if you would like to talk to a staff member please wait until all the children have been dismissed safely. Alternatively you can email, phone or make an appointment to see the teachers, our cards are on the front desk with full contact details. Formal parent/teacher interviews are offered in Term 2 and 4. Trinity Open Day on Sunday 1 April is an excellent chance to gain information and insight into our programme and activities.

The sunshine is back so we will be applying sunscreen to all children who are here for the day at lunch time.  If your child comes for a half day it would be appreciated if you could apply it before they arrive.

Vacancies

We have some vacancies in the afternoon sessions and Anita is happy to discuss options with you if you would like to increase the time your child spends with us. When looking at how often your child attends preschool in 2012, for children between three and four years of age, two sessions or more is recommended. If your child is aged between four and five years of age, and is preparing to start school in first term 2013, it is recommended they attend at least four sessions to make this transition to school as effective as possible. This could be done as full or half day combinations.  Anita or your child’s teacher would be happy to discuss options with you at any time.
